Young people’s exploration of environmental issues through artistic mediums

Our society is currently facing many different environmental problems, which are often connected to each other: global warming, an extensive loss of biodiversity, extreme weather, eutrophication, air pollution, toxins in our food, rising sea levels, deforestation etc.

In a world full of problems and constant messages about a dystopian present and future, where a lot of the responsibility tends to be put on us as individuals and our lifestyles, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Many young people suffer from climate anxiety, which can consist of a variety of different emotions: anger, sorrow, fear, guilt, anxiety, desperation and so on.

For my degree project at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, I have explored themes relating to different environmental issues and my own feelings on the subject. It subsequently led me to investigate what can happen when a group of young people get the opportunity to do the same. What can happen at the intersection of art education and environmental issues?
