Something I have experienced as rather common is that art teachers play music in the classroom during a lesson while the pupils are creating. In my research, I’ve explored the variations in how pupils (in Class Nine) feel that this background music in the art classroom affects the creative process and the perception of a peaceful study environment. What influence does this have on the pupil’s ability to ‘stand in dialogue’ with, for example, the materials they have at hand and the choices they make to lead the process forward, the tools they work with, and perhaps even a dialogue with others in the room? Gaining the opportunity to stand in dialogue is important as it can promote the subject’s ability to grow in a democratic way in the art classroom.
The workshop is thus a way of inviting the visitor into a brief process of creation while also listening to music genres that have been chosen by someone else. A way of inviting creation, a meeting with material and a dialogue, including with the music and how it is experienced in relation to this.
