Collected Materiality—A Dialogue with Shrink Cans
I’ve always wanted to collect something. I have envied those who find value in stamps, pins or unusual coins, but I’ve never found any object that I’ve wanted to own multiple copies of, or which has a value greater than that of its intended use. Above all, I’ve appreciated the ritual that comes with the collecting. The categorising, the archiving, a container intended for a specific object.
In my degree project, I combine reflections on the act of collecting and storing with a study in tacit knowledge of analogue woodworking techniques. In an iterative process, I repeatedly produce boxes and jars, with each solitary item together forming a collection.
