Alexander Bäckman

Commonplace

Alexander Bäckman (b. 1993, Stockholm, Sweden) is a visual artist who works mainly with painting. His art practice focuses on the construction/deconstruction of identity through a visual eclecticism. He uses diverse painting modes and style itself as a reflexive medium for the subject matter. During his years at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, he has examined what could be defined as the mundane and dull by using a dampened colour palette, painting stills from various television shows, movies and still-lifes of commonplace objects found in his vicinity. By examining the flux between content and context, painter and viewer, subject and object, he approaches the medium as something that can only be pursued ironically, through a posture of carelessness, haste, and disregard. A ostentatious repudiation of proficiency. A contradictory relationship that manifests through a reverence to the medium and practice.
