Truls Mårtensson’s work shows a constant ambition to create narratives out of fragmentary ideas which are acutely current. In his degree project, he has explored identity in the digital age, rooted in the notion of the impostor syndrome. His work is a meditation on the roles we take on in relation to social media.
Mårtensson invites the viewer into a transmogrified world that spans popular culture, fashion, ideas about status and consumerism etc. At its core, however, there is always a brooding melancholy.
In his practice, he wants to recreate the sensation of ploughing through the internet where no two things in succession ever really make sense. This creates a tangle of absurd juxtapositions that opens up an interesting dialogue.
There is a tension between the fast-paced themes he explores and the permanence of ceramic as a medium. It is here where the centre of Truls Mårtensson’s practice lies.
