Between the Rivers

Between the Rivers is a wordless novel for adults about in-betweenness and the loss of cultural affiliation. Two narratives are woven together in this story, one based on the author’s autobiography and the other on the ancient Mesopotamian myth of Inanna, the goddess of love and war. In the form of text and images, the work is an exploration of important moments from two destinies that give each other meaning and together create a deeper knowledge and understanding.

The author Ishtar Dakhil is an illustrator and multidisciplinary artist with a great passion for picture books. Her creative explorations of the picture book format have led to new and innovative ways of inviting the reader into a reading experience through interaction via virtual reality techniques. The interplay between the analogue and the digital is something that Ishtar Dakhil returns to repeatedly in her art. Recently, however, she has been focusing on exploring the classic picture book in its own right, in order to further enhance the tactile and physical reading experience.
